Movie of the Week: Toy Soliders

toy_soldiers

Rudy, Wesley Crusher, Chappy, Detective Briscoe. Toy Soldiers was a movie destined for greatness. Unfortunately, forgettable characters and subpar writing doomed it for failure. Never the less I will always remember Whil Weaton’s death scene, bursting through the doors machine gun in hand ready to kill some bad guys only to mowed down in hail of bullets. Patty Duke must have been proud of her son’s performance in this one…I swear the tears looked real, I know the sweat shirt was.

Despite my sarcasm, I actually like this movie for what it was. A “B” action film that was entertaining, despite the lack of nudity, because it was unintentionally funny due to the poor acting and story full of holes. Besides what 11 year old wouldn’t want to be able fight a bunch of terrorists? Or maybe because it was one of the first R rated movies I ever saw, who knows. (Predator was the first in case you were wondering you bunch of slacked jawed maggots).

The Wire: The Complete Series

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Despite a final season that did not quite meet my expectations (although I am not sure anything would have…) and criticism the series was not a realistic as it claimed to be, The Wire remains, in my opinion the best tv show to ever air. Set in Baltimore, the series follows the lives of both the police and the citizens caught in the city’s crippling drug and poverty problems. The story lines and characters will engage you mentally and emotionally, leaving you at times wondering which side to root for…With winter fully set in and the NFL season winding down, The Wire is a great way to fill the void.

The Shawshank Redemption Now On Blu-ray

Friday, December 19th, 2008

The Shawshank Redemption is easily my favorite movie all time. It also ranks #1 on IMDB’s list of user favorites. In my opinion is it the perfect character drama. The story is riveting and cast headed by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeeman deliver the performances of their careers. If by chance you have not seen it, stop what you are doing right now and go get it, you will not be disappointed.

For fans, like me the Blu-ray release is gold mine of content including all the extras from the Special Edition SD DVD like commentary by Writer/Director Frank Darabont, 2 Documentaries: Hope Springs Eternal: A Look Back at the Shawshank Redemption and Shawshank: The Redeeming Feature, The Charlie Rose Show Segment Featuring Frank Darabont, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, a comic spoof The Shawshank Redemption, stills and collectible galleries plus a 38-page book including actor and director biographies, film trivia and more.

Movie of the Week: The Usual Suspects

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I’ll be honest, the first 45 minutes or so of this movie are not great. The plot is slow to start because of the amount of character set-up that is needed to carry the story. But once you get through that, this movie is a gem. There is a great gun fight and the suspense just keeps building which while frustrating, is also wholly entertaining. The cast is first rate, Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro and Kevin Pollack all give good performances, but it is Kevin Spacey that steals the show for me. And trust me when I say the last 15 minutes might provide the best ending of any movie you have ever seen.

Movie of the Week: A Christmas Story

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Update:

My Amazon package just arrived and much to my disappointment, the only extras included with the movie was the cookie tin and string of leg lamp lights.  Although those are pretty awesome…Sorry for the misinformation.

A Christmas Story is one of my all-time favorite movies. I watch every year around the holidays. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw the Ultimate Collectors Edition on Blu-Ray had been released. So just what makes it the Ultimate Edition? Oh there is plenty!

A collectible retro Christmas cookie tin, a strand of leg-lamp Christmas lights (Blu-ray exclusive), 48-page cookbook with recipes inspired by the movie, photos and quotes from the movie, a red chef’s apron with an A Christmas Story logo on it and 5 collectible cookie cutters “in iconic Christmas Story shapes” like the Christmas tree star, the house, the leg lamp, Ralphie in his bunny suit, and the Peking Duck.

Plus you get a ton of DVD extras including director commentary and making of featurettes. The best part? You’ll never shoot your eye out!

Movie of the Week: American Psycho Blu-Ray

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Chances are you saw Christian Bail this summer in The Dark Knight. Despite being perhaps the greatest movie I have even seen, it was no where near Bail’s command performance. For that you need to check out Empire of the Sun, The Machinist or this week’s pick, American Psycho. Bail plays Patrick Bateman, investment banker with a ridiculous morning routine and obsession for business cards by day and chainsaw welding mass murderer by night. As his two lives begin to intersect, the real fun begins.

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Casino Royale, was far and away my favorite Bond film. So while we wait for Daniel Craig’s next turn in the iconic role this November, Amazon has just released a gem to get the taste buds salivating. MGM put together two volumes of Bond classics. Volume One contains Dr. No, Die Another Day and Live and Let Die. Volume Two includes For Your Eyes Only, From Russia with Love, Thunderball. At less then $20 per disc, this is one of the best Blu-Ray deals we have seen.

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Well the Planet Earth DVD set is not exactly a green product, but if you ever needed some inspiration to start reducing, reusing and recycling this best selling documentary is for you. Perhaps one of the most beautiful movies I have seen with nearly 10 hours of stunning landscapes and amazing animal footage from all corners of the global. The narrative is provided by the timeless David Attenborough which sealed the deal for us.
