Dock Extender (Docking without case removal)

For years, I never bought cases for any of my gadgets, but now its seems they have nearly become a mandatory item. My Kindle, iPad – although that is more for propping it up to watch videos in bed, Canon G11, MB Pro or my iPhone 4 all have some sort of protective carrying case. But this with evolution in my shopping habits, I have had to sacrifice my use of charging docks – which has long been one of my favorite accessories. The good news is there are more and more solutions out there that allows customers to use both. Many iPad case manufacturer are building in removable back pieces to accommodate a dock and SendStation has a practical if a bit overpriced dock extender for use with virtually any iPod or iPhone.

The kit comes with the actual extender, a wire support, and 3 rubber pads of varying thickness depending on how far your phone sits away from the support. As you can hopefully see from the picture above, I am using it in a Kensington iPhone Dock, in which it fits perfectly. Even with the Otterbox Defender case. In my mind, value of is function of utility so calling the Dock Extender overpriced is perhaps a bit unfair as it works almost flawlessly. The only real problems that have surfaced so far are it takes two hands to add or remove a phone – either the case tab is in the way to dock or the dock is not heavy enough to stay in place when I go to pull the phone off and the extender often pulls off the dock instead of the phone.

So while I am pretty happy with the solution, it is relatively expensive and it doesn’t work perfectly but I think the investment was worth it.

Speck Products iPhone CandyShell

I typically avoid cell phone cases. I find them to be either overbuilt for the average user (like the Otterbox) or cheaply constructed pieces of plastic that offer no really protection against the accidental drop. So I just go naked. But I am always on the look out for that one perfect case. The CandyShell is as close to perfection as I have found. Speck took its form fitting hard shell and lined it with a great soft rubber material for excellent shock absorption. The result is a surprisingly heavy duty case that is still nice and slim for easy pocketing. The CandyShell is available in a variety of colors. all with a classy glossy finish.

Three of my favorite sporting events happen in the span of about 30 days: the NCAA Tournament, The Masters and the NFL Draft. So far there has been a shiny iPhone app for each one. Luckily for us, unlike the CBS NCAA app, the app for the Master this weekend is completely free. Features include live video of Amen Corner (holes 11, 12 and 13) plus coverage of holes 15 and 16 along with video highlights, a live leader board, interactive course map with video flyovers and more. Looks like perfect companion for a weekend on the couch to us.

Incase EO Collection

Incase is fast becoming one of my favorite companies. To their already great line up bags, iPhone and Mac accessories, they have just introduced the new EO Collection which includes several bags and travel accessories. Some of the highlights: self cleaning fabric that is water, dirt and oil repellent, heavy duty construction of clasps and zipper plus great visual appeal. The prices points are reasonable too, something we have come to expect from Incase. Head over to the company’s site for full details.

Doubling you up on iPhone app goodness this week. CBS has launched a live video feed app for the iPhone letting watch the tournament even if you stuck somewhere without a TV like work. You also get brackets updates, highlight videos and team by team analysis. Only caveat is if you are on 3G the feed is audio only. Gotta be on WiFi for the video to come through.

I have been lapse in the last few weeks posting my favorite iPhone apps but not due to a lack of options, rather just a lack of focus. But the feature is back this week and with a great app for you – JotNot. I came across it today and was so impressed with it inspired me write a review tonight.

In a nutshell, here is what it does. Take a picture of a whiteboard or really any document and then upload to the app. Then JotNot allows you to select the text you want to enhance and runs it through a series of filters to improve the readability. The proof is the in the pudding just check out the before and after shots above. At just $3.99 it is super cheap too. [via]

iPhone App of the Week: Amazon Kindle Reader

I am not too sure what to think about the Kindle iPhone app just yet. I like idea, but at least on the surface, it seems to defeat the purpose for which the Kindle was built. The Kindle and other e-book readers work because of their use of e-paper, a display that requires no back lighting so there is no strain on the eyes. Honestly, I cannot imagine trying to read a book of any length on the iPhone’s bright, small (in comparison) display. Not only would battery life be terrible but I imagine it would be headache inducing experience in just minutes.

That being said, there are some rather nice features the app brings. Its is free, for everyone, not just current Kindle owners. You can download books directly to your iPhone (via Amazon’s site using Safari, no neat interface unfortunately) and Amazon’s Whispersync network automatically syncs your purchases if you are a Kindle owner.

I get what Amazon it trying to do but I am just don’t think it is really all that practical in application.
