Tide Coldwater Detergent

Friday, October 17th, 2008

As Green Week ends, we thought a look at another hot water hog would be appropriate. The average washing machine uses 55 gallons of water per load. At least half of which is hot water. So if your family averages 8 loads of laundry in week that could equal at least 220 gallons of water that needs to be heated. That is unless you switch to a cold water detergent. Tide has developed a formula that works just as well removing stains in cold water as hot. So what kind of cost saving does this translate into.

With the same method that we used earlier this week when calculating the cost of hot water for showers, we figure it costs about $240 per year to heat that water assuming a 50% hot water mix. Pretty big savings for doing nothing more than changing detergents.

Heating Cost Calculator

Friday, October 17th, 2008

While I was researching post for Green week I came across this handy worksheet for calculating the cost of switching to a new heating source. It helps you calculate the cost of the current source against the cost of the new equipment to help you decide which format to choose. Options include electricity, heating oil, propane, natural gas, wood pellets and cord wood. The only costs the worksheet does not account for is the equipment and installation.

ZipCar

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

ZipCar is a super cool idea that I wish was in my area. The car sharing business allows its 200,000 members to access any car in the company’s network. There are two styles of plans including a monthly membership for heavy users or a pay-as-you-go plan for the occasional user. The fees include the rental, gas and insurance. The best part of the program is that you can pay by the hour or day depending on your need starting at just $7.86.

The Green benefits are numerous as well. According to the company 40% if its members decide to end personal ownership of a vehicle which leads to 50% less driving.  ZipCar says that every one of their cars replaces 15 privately owned ones. “To date, Zipcar estimates it has taken more than 50,000 vehicles off the road. This results in less congestion on the roadways and fewer greenhouse gas emissions and particulates. Older cars are replaced with new Zipcars that have more stringent pollution controls, preserving green space because fewer parking spaces are required to meet the needs of the same number of people.”

Currently, in 22 cities, check out their site for availability.  Even if they are not your area, heavy travelers can take advantage of service as well as an alternative to the national rental companies.

With home heating costs expected to rise this winter, now is a great time to make a small investment in a programmable thermostat. The general consensus is that for every 1 degree you lower the temperature you save 2% in fuel costs. With proper management and the help of a programmable thermostat the savings can add up to well over $100 in the course of a year.

Delta Adjustable Flow Showerhead

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

As Green Week rolls on it is time to talk about low flow appliances. Installing low-flow items like toilets and shower heads can add up to not only big savings but also a great way to conserve water. To show you what I mean, I broke out the old slide rule and crunched some numbers.

A low-flow shower head can reduce your water usage by 25% or more. This Delta model is adjustable from 2.5 gallons per minute down to 1.85 per minute. That means a family of 4 who each take a 10 minute shower per day can save 9,500 gallons a year. Based on the prices in my area that amounts to about $36 per year in cost savings.

But there’s more. After a little research I figured out it costs about $200 to heat all that water using a standard tank water heater. So for $25 you can save $236 or more per year and help conserve a ton (38 tons actually) of water. Seems like a good idea to me.

50 Gallon Rain Barrel

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Believe it or not rainwater run-off is one of the worst pollutants of our creeks and rivers. This is because it can carry toxins from things like insecticides and fertilizers and can quickly overwhelm municipal treatment facilities during downpours. With the addition of a simple rain barrel you can help conserve water, prevent pollution and save a few bucks. Just attach the barrel to your gutter system and let it fill up. After a storm or two you will have an ample and renewable water supply for your plants or grass.

Wait…What? A Green Cutting Board?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Yeah a GREEN cutting board…but it doesn’t use energy or produce waste you say? Of course not, but its still GREEN. How you ask? It’s made from bamboo, an easily renewable resource. You see, bamboo is not wood at all but rather a fast growing grass who’s popularity is exploding with the green movement. It is being used for flooring, wall coverings, dishes and of course cutting boards. And to be perfectly honest it is the best board I have ever used. It is extremely fast, gently on my knives and easy to maintain. Just wash after use with a little soap and warm water and wipe down with mineral oil every six months so. You can even refinish it with some light sanding if necessary.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL) have been around for a while now, but I still know loads of people who have not taken the plunge. I took an informal survey to find out why and the most common response was cost. A pack of 4 traditional bulbs for less than a dollar or 4 CFL’s for $10 – 15? However, despite the relativity high start up cost the math still makes sense.

When I switched my house over 2 years I spent roughly $200 on 50 bulbs. Seems like a lot but since then I have not replaced a single CFL and my electric bill has gone down an average of $12 per month even though usage (in hours) has increased. With a little pencil work you can see: $12 x 24 = $288 – $200 (start up) = a net $88 in my pocket not even considering how my bills could have gone up due to increased usage or the replacement costs of the cheap bulbs. Let’s see…eco-friendly, lower maintenance and more money in your pocket. So why haven’t you switched yet?
