Band of Brothers Blu-Ray Collector's Set

Last week during Amazon’s daily HBO TV deal I grabbed the Band of Brothers series on Blu-ray. Being a huge WWII nut, I had already seen the show several times but at the ridiculous price of $35 bucks it was a no brainer to buy it.

I did not have huge expectations for the Blu-ray quality since BOB was filmed nearly 10 years ago, but thankfully Hanks and Spielberg used film to capture their masterpiece so the transition to 1080p is flawless. The price is back to just over $50 but its still well worth adding to your growing Blu-ray collection.

Movie of the Week: The Usual Suspects

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I’ll be honest, the first 45 minutes or so of this movie are not great. The plot is slow to start because of the amount of character set-up that is needed to carry the story. But once you get through that, this movie is a gem. There is a great gun fight and the suspense just keeps building which while frustrating, is also wholly entertaining. The cast is first rate, Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro and Kevin Pollack all give good performances, but it is Kevin Spacey that steals the show for me. And trust me when I say the last 15 minutes might provide the best ending of any movie you have ever seen.

Movie of the Week: A Christmas Story

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Update:

My Amazon package just arrived and much to my disappointment, the only extras included with the movie was the cookie tin and string of leg lamp lights.  Although those are pretty awesome…Sorry for the misinformation.

A Christmas Story is one of my all-time favorite movies. I watch every year around the holidays. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw the Ultimate Collectors Edition on Blu-Ray had been released. So just what makes it the Ultimate Edition? Oh there is plenty!

A collectible retro Christmas cookie tin, a strand of leg-lamp Christmas lights (Blu-ray exclusive), 48-page cookbook with recipes inspired by the movie, photos and quotes from the movie, a red chef’s apron with an A Christmas Story logo on it and 5 collectible cookie cutters “in iconic Christmas Story shapes” like the Christmas tree star, the house, the leg lamp, Ralphie in his bunny suit, and the Peking Duck.

Plus you get a ton of DVD extras including director commentary and making of featurettes. The best part? You’ll never shoot your eye out!

Movie of the Week: American Psycho Blu-Ray

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Chances are you saw Christian Bail this summer in The Dark Knight. Despite being perhaps the greatest movie I have even seen, it was no where near Bail’s command performance. For that you need to check out Empire of the Sun, The Machinist or this week’s pick, American Psycho. Bail plays Patrick Bateman, investment banker with a ridiculous morning routine and obsession for business cards by day and chainsaw welding mass murderer by night. As his two lives begin to intersect, the real fun begins.

Casino Royale, was far and away my favorite Bond film. So while we wait for Daniel Craig’s next turn in the iconic role this November, Amazon has just released a gem to get the taste buds salivating. MGM put together two volumes of Bond classics. Volume One contains Dr. No, Die Another Day and Live and Let Die. Volume Two includes For Your Eyes Only, From Russia with Love, Thunderball. At less then $20 per disc, this is one of the best Blu-Ray deals we have seen.

In the Valley of Elah

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

I consider myself a bit of a movie buff, but during last years award season I completely missed hearing about or seeing “In the Valley of Elah”. This movie is fantastic. It is a story of a retired Army Sargent, Hank Deerfield, searching for his son after he goes missing upon returning from the war in Iraq. Tommy Lee Jones was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Deerfield. The movie also star Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon, Josh Brolin and has appearances by Jason Patric, Frances Fisher and James Franco.

What struck me most about this movie is how quiet it is. There is dialog when it is needed but the emotions of the movie are really translated through the body language of the stars. Tommy Lee Jones was masterful in his ability to convey the pain and frustration Deerfield was experiencing without saying a word. This is a movie worth seeing.

LG Blu-ray Disc Burner

Friday, August 1st, 2008

The prices of Blu-ray drives and media have been dropping as of late, making it a more interesting data back-up option since each single layer disc can hold 25 GB of data.  This unit from LG is multi-talented handling a variety of formats including DVD-+RW CD-RW, Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs.  Dual layer Blu-ray and HD-DVD media is also compatible.  Other features include LightScribe for neat labeling.

Compared to external HDD, Blu-ray is still more expensive averaging $0.47 per GB versus $0.20, but it just might be more practical for off-site storage and archiving.  But hey, being cutting edge is never cheap.
