Dock Extender (Docking without case removal)

For years, I never bought cases for any of my gadgets, but now its seems they have nearly become a mandatory item. My Kindle, iPad – although that is more for propping it up to watch videos in bed, Canon G11, MB Pro or my iPhone 4 all have some sort of protective carrying case. But this with evolution in my shopping habits, I have had to sacrifice my use of charging docks – which has long been one of my favorite accessories. The good news is there are more and more solutions out there that allows customers to use both. Many iPad case manufacturer are building in removable back pieces to accommodate a dock and SendStation has a practical if a bit overpriced dock extender for use with virtually any iPod or iPhone.

The kit comes with the actual extender, a wire support, and 3 rubber pads of varying thickness depending on how far your phone sits away from the support. As you can hopefully see from the picture above, I am using it in a Kensington iPhone Dock, in which it fits perfectly. Even with the Otterbox Defender case. In my mind, value of is function of utility so calling the Dock Extender overpriced is perhaps a bit unfair as it works almost flawlessly. The only real problems that have surfaced so far are it takes two hands to add or remove a phone – either the case tab is in the way to dock or the dock is not heavy enough to stay in place when I go to pull the phone off and the extender often pulls off the dock instead of the phone.

So while I am pretty happy with the solution, it is relatively expensive and it doesn’t work perfectly but I think the investment was worth it.

SpeckSkin Hard Case

As I wrote about earlier, after years of lusting over them, I finally took the plunge and bought a Macbook Pro. Although I am still figuring out OSX after a decade plus of being a Windows user, I absolutely love it – especially the build quality of the uni-body aluminum case. While the aluminum look is uber hot, after just a few days of use I was getting so paranoid about scratching it I knew I had to do something. So after a bit of research, I settled on the SpeckSkin Hard Case.

It is a hard plastic shell that perfectly fits the MBP, protecting it from the random spill or scratch while still leaving all the ports available. The outside of the shell is coated in a soft satiny paint that feels great to the touch and is just translucent enough for the spiffy Apple logo to still show through. Sure it is disappointing to have to cover up all that beautiful aluminum, it is much better than the alternative.

Targus 4-Port Bend-A-Hub With Mini USB Adapter

hub

So I finally did it. After years of talking about it, I drank the Kool-Aid and bought the 15 inch MacBook Pro. What a beautiful machine. My only complaint is the lack of USB ports. There are only 2, right next to each other. That means I cannot use my wireless aircard, usb flash drive and wireless mouse at the same time. In fact when I am using the aircard, that is the only peripheral I can use.

No worries though, this Targus hub solves the problem quite nicely. Small and compact with a sneaky little feature: a flip up mini USB connection that works as a charger/data cable. Mikey likey.

Take a picture of a whiteboard or really any document and then upload to the app. Then JotNot allows you to select the text you want to enhance and runs it through a series of filters to improve the readability. Yes we realize that you can easily backup your contacts to your computer, but we think this app still has a lot of merit. First, not everyone regularly syncing their phone to their computer. To be honest, based on my experience, the average user does NOT sync on a regular basis. So if you lose your phone, you stand to lose several contacts as well. Next, its free so why not add one more layer of protection to help ensure you never lose your contacts. Finally, it allows you to export your contacts so if you ever switch to another phone you can easily restore everything. Did we mention its free?

Unibody 17" MacBook Pro is Super!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Ok, I am not a fan boy of Apple or Steve Jobs but since the introduction of the MacBook about 4 years ago I have been wanting to drink the Kool-Aid something terrible. With that said, it is worth mentioning that I have never actually owned an Apple product other than the 2G iPhone. However, with today’s announce of the forthcoming Unibody MacBook Pro may just change that.

Spec include an 17″ LED backlit widescreen display, up to 8 GB of 1066 DDR3 RAM (otherwise known as superfast RAM), 8 hours of battery life, an option for a 256 GB SSD plus NVIDA 9400M and a 9600M GT graphics processors. Everything is wrapped up in the sweet aluminum unibody case. There is even an option for a non-glossy display. Oh yeah, it weighs just 6.6 pounds. Sure a fully loaded unit blows past $4K but isn’t that a small price to pay for cutting edge?

If the uniblock aluminum housing of the Macbook and Macbook Pro’s does not have you all hot and bothered, There is some serious coin to be saved by going with a last generation model. The hardware specs are nearly identical (Editors Note: there are a few significant differences such as a much improved graphics card) and you can save over $550 after rebate from Amazon by keeping it “old” school. Rebate expires 12/8/08.

Sure we are in a “recession” but Apple has just given a us a great excuse reason to dust off the credit card and spend a couple of thousand bucks.  From Engadget: “Apple’s using NVIDIA’s new 9400M GPU + chipset 1-2 punch for integrated graphics, supplemented by 9600M GT switchable discreet graphics chip for heavy lifting, and pumping out those graphics over a Mini DisplayPort connector, if you’d like to supplement the LED backlit screen. As expected there’s an SSD option, with drive accessible underneath the battery. The 15.4-inch base model retails for $1999, with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and both GPUs.
