My Favorite Kindle Case

After upgrading to the latest Kindle, I was hesitant to slap a big bulky case on it. I am not a huge fan of case in general and considering how nice and slim the new Kindle is, I did not want to lose that. Well, I held off as long as I could but a few weeks ago I saw about an inch long scratch had appeared on the plastic housing. Just enough to drive a man crazy.

It took me a few days but I finally settled on the Timbuk 2 in a snappy neon green and gray pattern. The outer nylon cloth shell is quilted with high density memory foam and the interior is covered in an ultra-soft faux fur. The case is perfectly form fitting, providing great protection for the device in my travel bag.

Depending on your needs, this may not be the case for. You do need to completely remove your Kindle from the case to use it and there is no extra room for any accessories like the charger or screen light. For me, that was an ok trade-off as I really never travel with those items anyway and I get to keep the Kindle and its sleek form factor, just the way I like it.

Invisible Hand

hand

I have been a loyal Firefox user for years (although I have been using Chrome a bit more lately because of its tight integration with my Google Apps and I am sorry to say because it makes FF look downright pokey in page load comparisons) The primary reason behind my affinity for either browser are the hundreds of user created extensions that make my internet experience much more enjoyable.

With my internet shopping addication well documented it is no surprise that Invisible Hand is among my favorite browser extensions. Once you installed IH, it just sits in the background waiting for you to start shopping. Go to any of the 53 partner websites including Amazon, Buy.com, Sears, Best Buy and Walmart, click in the product you are interested in amd IH pops and tells you were the best price is at.

While you are limited to price comparison within in the partner network, in the year or so I have been using it, I have yet to find a lower price anywhere else.

iPhone App of the Week: Amazon Kindle Reader

I am not too sure what to think about the Kindle iPhone app just yet. I like idea, but at least on the surface, it seems to defeat the purpose for which the Kindle was built. The Kindle and other e-book readers work because of their use of e-paper, a display that requires no back lighting so there is no strain on the eyes. Honestly, I cannot imagine trying to read a book of any length on the iPhone’s bright, small (in comparison) display. Not only would battery life be terrible but I imagine it would be headache inducing experience in just minutes.

That being said, there are some rather nice features the app brings. Its is free, for everyone, not just current Kindle owners. You can download books directly to your iPhone (via Amazon’s site using Safari, no neat interface unfortunately) and Amazon’s Whispersync network automatically syncs your purchases if you are a Kindle owner.

I get what Amazon it trying to do but I am just don’t think it is really all that practical in application.

Affordable Network Storage with Jungle Disk

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

I have been looking for a new storage solution to help me centralize all of my files, especially media. Currently, I need to synchronize my personal laptop with the 3 HDD’s that I use with my desktop. I have been looking at various solutions, but what makes Jungle Disk the most attractive to me is the offsite storage aspect of the system. Currently, I have enough free space to use a program like Sync Back and a simple home network, but if anything were to happen to my system like a house fire or flood, I would lose all my data.

Jungle Disk has a simple pricing model of just $0.15 per gigabyte of data transfer and does not require a service agreement. The data is stored by Amazon’s S3 service so you can trust it will be safe and secure. Other features include an automatic back option along with a shared network drive solution plus options for businesses. I hope to  get squared away this weekend so look for a full review sometime next week.
