A New Era in Bluetooth Headsets

jawbone-era-blueooth

I have been testing the new Jawbone Era for couple of weeks and thought it was time to share my thoughts on Aliph’s latest noise destroying headset. I have been a fan of the brand since its inception. To launch the original Jawbone, the company produced a short video with some pretty crazy demonstrations to show the power of the its then new NoiseAssassin algorithm.

When they turned on the leaf blower and the headset was able to effectively eliminate that level of background noise, I was sold.

Of course, as powerful as those demo’s were, there was one huge gaping hole in that strategy. It does not matter how well the person on the other end of the call can hear me, if I cannot hear them. With a leaf blower going full blast just a few yards away, the user would have little chance of enjoying a conversation. Which sums up my main issue with technology even now, four years later.

While manufactures have improved nearly every other aspect of their headset, incoming audio quality has remained a continuing source of annoyance and frustration. So after reading Aliph had specifically addressed this issue, I was quite excited to get and see how successful the company was in achieving a resolution.

Era

Their method of attack was to use the NoiseAssassin 3.0 technology to automatically adjust the incoming volume level based on the users surrounding. So ideally, you will no longer have to resort to fumbling around trying to find a couple of small buttons on the side of your head to try and hear what your wife wants for dinner because you happen to driving by a construction site.

So far, I have not noticed the technology in action. And to me, that indicates the effort is pretty darn effective. My experience in both an office environment that can get quite loud and regular use commuting, dealing with the usual road noise I have not had to adjust the volume or ask someone to speak up. In fact, I kinda forgot about it until after an especially long conversation and realizing that not once did I have any trouble hearing.

The updated Era also adds HD audio for a better music/media experience and an accelerometer that lets you shake the headset to pair and double tap to answer a call. At $130 the Era is a the top of price heap, nothing unusual for the flagship Jawbone and if you rely on a headset to get through your day, you cannot do any better than the Era.

iPhone App of the Week: iDrive Lite

Yes we realize that you can easily backup your contacts to your computer, but we think this app still has a lot of merit. First, not everyone regularly syncing their phone to their computer. To be honest, based on my experience, the average user does NOT sync on a regular basis. So if you lose your phone, you stand to lose several contacts as well. Next, its free so why not add one more layer of protection to help ensure you never lose your contacts. Finally, it allows you to export your contacts so if you ever switch to another phone you can easily restore everything. Did we mention its free?

The Comfort Cradle

bury

Despite my current infatuation with the iPhone, I still use and love my Blackberry Bold everyday. So to makeup for the lack of attention I have been giving it I ordered my Bold a little present last week, The Comfort Cradle by Bury Technologies. The kit comes with an external antenna, a customer molded phone holder and a cigarette lighter power adapter. I attached the holder to my Pro-Fit VSM G3 mount. I really enjoy having my phone up off the seat and out of the way.

The positioning is great for using the navigation software and I have even seen a small bump in call quality, especially in 2G areas. Considering a power cord is $30 by itself, the Comfort Cradle is a pretty good value at less then $70.

Incase iPhone 3G Cases

With the purchase of my new iPhone 3G (I decided to dual carry the Bold with the iPhone, why? Because I can…) comes the decision of how to protect it. At last count, there was about 1,037,948 choices, so the choice takes a bit of research. For me, it is coming down to 2 options, both by Incase.

First up, is the Power Slider which integrates a lithium-ion polymer battery that should more than double the battery life with a protective rubber case. I like it because it combines the battery and case into one product that does not completely destroy the profile of the iPhone, allow for it to still be carried in the pocket.

The second choice is another by Incase, that forgoes the extended battery and rubber case for a white or black hard plastic shell that is finished with soft touch paint and is just 1 MM thick. The case is two-piece so you can slide off the bottom for easy docking. The interior is lined with rubber rails for added shock protection.

So which to choose?

iPhone App of the Week

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

iphone

I picked up an iPhone 3G to add to my menagerie of phones a few weeks ago so I thought I would add a new feature to site, the iPhone App of the Week. If it proves popular, it will continue on a regular basis. If there is an app out there you would like review, lets us know in the comments. (Editor’s Note: All apps will come from the Download Store, not the installer program available if you unlock your device)

For the first edition of this column, I chose the wickedly addicting game, Field Runners. The concept is simple: stop the enemy from getting into you base. However, the task is not simple at all. You start with $15 from which to purchase your weaponry (machine gun $5, slimer $10, rocket launcher $10, tesla coil $70) for each successful kill you earn between $1 and $20 depending on the enemy eliminated. With the loot you earn you have to construct your defenses. You only get 20 hit points so your purchases have better be smart. Personally, I found the maze method to be the most effective but I still cannot beat the game on hard.

A second map is also included where you have to defend 2 enemy insertion points on a small field, making your task infinitely more difficult. Considering the game is only $5, the 10 or so hours I have already logged on it made Field Runners an excellent and extremely fun value.

Berry Locator

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

I am forgetful. Especially when it comes to my car keys and cellphone. I hate having things in my pocket, so whenever I get somewhere I empty out all my stuff. Inevitably, I will misplace something. The problem with losing my Blackberry (aside for the getting the shakes from withdrawal) is that I keep it on silent due the amount of email I get – otherwise it would be going off constantly. So you see the dilemma, I can’t call it to find it. Berry Locator solves that particular problem quite nicely.

All you do is send an email to an account on the device and its starts making all kinds of noise, along with the screen and LED indicator flashing different colors. Plus if you have a GPS unit, the company sends you coordinates of your device which is very handy if it has been stolen.

The service is compatible with every Blackberry with the price varying by carrier. I paid $5 for it and the company offers a direct download for $6.95 from its site if you cannot find anywhere else.

Blackberry Bold Charging Pod

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I retired my old reliable Blackberry Curve this weekend in favor of the new 3G Bold. Unfortunately, the nifty charging pod I reviewed earlier is not compatible across models so I had to order a couple of new ones today for my house and office. But at just $13 bucks each, it is worth it to keep my desks neat and organized. Plus, I really like that when you dock the Bold, it auto displays a clock. Just one of those little things that keep me a Blackberry fan.

Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I have been using this headset for a few days now, and surprisingly enough it have turned into my favorite model. It doesn’t have the military noise canceling of the Jawbone 2 or the spiffy industrial design of Motorola Pure, but the Discovery 925 still has exceeded my expectations. It is lightweight, comfortable and I have not had one complaint that I am “talking on a headset”. For the me that is the true test.

Accessories include a travel charger, USB charging cable, 3 ear gels and a nifty leather charger/carrying case.

Cellular Nationwide Network

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Since we spend a lot of time in the field, our cell phones are subject to a bit of abuse. Warranties don’t cover physical damage and insurance can be an expense crap-shoot since we have ended up with junk phones more often then not it seems. Now we have taken matters in our own hand with a great new site we found. CNN.cn.

Nope its not CNN’s Canadian new’s desk. CNN.cn sells huge selection of replacement parts for manufacters like RIM, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Palm and Apple. You can pick up parts like a battery doors, bezels, sceens, or keypads on the cheap. Check it before trashing your phone. Unless its melted, not much you can do then.
