WWII: A Filmed History

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I have always been fascinated with the history and stories of World War II. As a kid, some of my favorite books were true accounts of prisoner escapes from POW camps and secret special forces missions. Some of the best movies ever have based on WWII like The Bridge over the River Kwai, The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan and my absolute favorite film Band of Brothers (which hits Blu-Ray 11/11).

Yesterday, The National Archives release the penutimate DVD collection for people like me.  WWII: A Filmed History is 24 discs – 26 hours of footage featuring everything from historical newsreel footage to documentary featurettes lensed and narrated by some of Hollywood’s greatest names.

From America to Europe, from the air to the sea, experience a war that spanned the globe: Set #1: War in Europe Explores the Nazi ambition for world conquest, featuring historical pre-cursors, artillery and infantry attacks, the invasion Poland, and the horrific concentration camps.

Set #2: War on the Homefront Takes you stateside to a time when gas rationing, food conservation, and the wartime efforts of civilian men and women occupied a nation. Features narration by James Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, and Humphrey Bogart, as wells as the acting talents of Susan Hayward, Alan Ladd, James Cagney, Margaret O’Brien and more.

Set #3: War in the Pacific Dramatic footage of U.S. Navy, Marine, and Army forces as they combat the Japanese military. Seattle Sling Waterproof Camera Bag

Monday, September 29th, 2008

We have tens of thousands of dollars invested in our camera gear so keeping it secure, clean and DRY when traveling or working in the field is a priority. The folks at Camera Armor are trying to help this effort with the introduction of the Seattle Sling bag. It is standard padded bag with two unique innovations: an interior dry bag to lock out dust, dirt and moisture plus an customizable strap system that allows you carry the bag traditionally over your shoulder or convert it to a backpack. The outside flap is also designed to accommodate a small tripod.

There is a lot to like about this bag but there are a few improvements we would love to see in future versions including exterior pockets for accessories, a larger interior capacity and an overall weight reduction. Amazon has the lowest price we have found plus free shipping so if you are interested hit the link below.

Easily Access and Back-Up Files with Gmail

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Gmail is by far and away our favorite email program. We use it to manage both our personal and corporate accounts. Even with saving most every email that comes our way, we still have plenty of storage space left over so we thought it should be put to use as a handy “network” drive. There are a bunch of options out there, but we have found GSpace to be the one we like best.

GSpace is a free Firefox extension provides an easy to use interface for uploading your files. Just install the extension, log into your Gmail account and your ready to start transferring. We also created a filter to drop any “emails” with GSpace in the subject into our storage folder, helps keep the clutter out of our inbox and us from accidentally deleting a file we needed.

Take your Desk into the Field

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Finding a flat work surface in the field can be tough. This problem is magnified when your typical “field” is a fire scene. The Finely Portable Workstation is a pretty cool solution to this tricky situation. Constructed of tough denier nylon fabric, the unit is assembled by inserting 2 pieces of plywood (24x48x1/2) to create the “desktop”. Then just drive a couple nails into some good studs and hang.

The the back of the workstation has rows of mesh pockets to organize notebooks, pens, small tools etc. Now you can setup your laptop, take notes, review photos or whatever else you need to do more comfortably while keeping your gear clean and neat at the same time.

Bosch Litheon 36 Volt Lithium-Ion Rotary Hammer

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Yes we have been drooling over the new lines of ultra compact tools, who wouldn’t be? But not to worry! Sure the Kool-Aid is strong, but we know you still need and want full size, professional tools. So how about we get started with this beast, the Bosch 36 Volt Lith-Ion Rotary Hammer Drill?

This baby eats concrete for breakfast. It boasts an SDS-Plus bit system for tool-free bit changes and automatic bit locking for dust protection and maximum energy transfer. The integrated Vario-Lock positioning rotates and locks the chisel into any one of 36 different positions — and the integral clutch helps minimize torque reaction as you shift tasks and speeds. The 11536VSR has a 1-inch solid bit capacity and a 2.5-inch core bit capacity, and it offers an impact force of 2.2 ft./lbs. It has a no-load speed of 0-960 rpm and a no-load impact rate of 0-4,2600 bpm.

The kit includes 360-degree auxiliary handle, carrying case, one-hour charger, depth gauge, and two Litheon batteries. And don’t over look the value of Lith-Ion batteries either. They provide consistent power until empty – no slow death Ni-Cads here, and they can recharge to 80% in 30 minutes or 100% capacity in an hour.

Panasonic Viera 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

HDTV’s are becoming as common as a toaster and the choices can be overwhelming at times. One of the biggest decisions to make is whether to purchase and LCD or plasma unit. Each format has its advantages, but for our money we typically prefer plasma TV’s for their truer black levels and faster refresher rate (approximately 600 Khz/sec vs 66 or 120 Khz/sec).

The new flagship Viera model from Panasonic does nothing but reinforce this opinion. It is the first television that has been THX certified to display the best picture right out of the box. No need to spend hours with the calibration dvd fine tuning the display. But that not all…it has a whopping 4 HDMI ports, a ridiculous 1000000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, built-in SD card slot, full PC compatibility and Panasonics new AR (Anti-Reflective) Filter technology.

Amazon is running a great deal on this TV too! The lowest price we found, free shipping and in many cases no sales tax. Pretty hard to beat.

Check out the CNET.com review below. The Viera was an Editor’s Choice pick in May recieving a 8.7 rating.
