Incase is fast becoming one of my favorite companies. To their already great line up bags, iPhone and Mac accessories, they have just introduced the new EO Collection which includes several bags and travel accessories. Some of the highlights: self cleaning fabric that is water, dirt and oil repellent, heavy duty construction of clasps and zipper plus great visual appeal. The prices points are reasonable too, something we have come to expect from Incase. Head over to the company’s site for full details.

Phillips USB Powered Speakers

speakers

I recently attended a meeting where the sound for the Power Point presentation was provided by the speaker’s laptop. Unsurprising, the audio was soft and spotty costing the presenter the attention of his audience. If you keep a pair of these Phillips USB speakers in your bag you can avoid such an embarrassment should your host facility not have the appropriates A/V gear. Sure they are not going overwhelming your group with amazing lows and stunning highs, but how many presentations need that?

Wrinke-Free Ties with the Tie Winder

There are dozens of tie travel cases that essential do the same thing: keep your ties neat and wrinkle free while traveling. While we have not done extensive testing on offerings out there, our favorite is this nifty roll-up model by WildTies. The cylinder is the longest and widest that we found so it can easily accommodate the longer, thicker ties we favor. Just insert the narrow end in first and wind it up.

Get Automatic Itinerary Updates with TripChill.com

Between the shear incompetence of the airline industry and the unpredictability of winter weather, there is a pretty good chance we will experience at least one travel delay this week (we hope its only one). Eliminate at least part of the headache that comes with frequent travel by singing up for a free TripChill account. Once you forward your itinerary to the site, you will begin receiving real-time mobile alerts for delays, cancellations or gate changes. Plus it alerts your friends and colleagues about your travel status and provides the ability to book car and hotel from your phone. There is even a TripChill iPhone app.

Sure that stuff is cool but my favorite feature of the site the picture of the frustrated traveler rocking a Moto TimePort circa 2000. Rather funny for a service that promotes its wireless phone integration since that phone was not even capable of SMS… Then again, I am a cell phone nerd…

America's Test Kitchen Top Pick: Themos Travel Mug

thermos3

Its no secret that brewing your own coffee is silly cheaper than buying it from a coffee shop each morning. The trick is keeping it hot and not all over the floor of your car. With hundreds of travel mugs on the market, the Test Kitchen decided to find the very best one out there.

The winner was the reasonably priced Thermos TherMaX stainless steel model. Features include excellent heat retention, a comfortable rubber grip and a leak proof seal. But the stand out feature is the 360 degree sipping lid which has has holes completely around the rim for easy drinking, regardless of how the cup is held.

If you are serious about your coffee, you might consider paring the TherMax with ATK’s winner coffee maker the Technivorm Moccamaster.

Eton FR300 Emergency Crank Radio

I picked up one of these little beauties after last month’s ice storm knock out power for nearly a week. Endorsed by the Red Cross, the FR300 combines and LED light/cellphone charger and AM/Radio into one small – hand cranked – package. In our tests 60 seconds of cranking turned into about 45 minutes of power, which is pretty darn good. In addition to the standard AM/FM bands you also get 7 NOAA weather channels and a weather alert, and TV-VHF audio reception for channels 2 – 13. The spiffy red metal case is just gravy. Looking for something for the car? Check out the FR150, handheld size with the same features plus solar recharging…

Taylor Digital Luggage Scale

Avoid the ridiculous excess weight baggage fees charged by the airlines with this handy digital scale. Just attached it the the handle of your bag and lift. The weight is displayed on the top of the grip. Considering that the fees can run a $100 or more per bag, $17.99 is a pretty good investment.

Portable Humidifier

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

One of the many reasons, I avoid traveling for work as often as possible is the ridiculously dry air in hotel rooms. Usually I will run the shower for a while, but it doesn’t seem to do very much. However relief is just a UPS delivery away, in the form the of a portable humidifier. Just attach any standard water bottle and you are in business.

I know it sounds prissy to travel with your own humidifier, but I don’t care. I sleep better and wake up with clear sinuses and no eyes problems from them drying out – which is still an issue for me after lasik surgery last February. So there.
