Wagner Power Steamer

905-complete-steamer

Very rarely does a product exceed my expectations. Typical, and the primary reason we started this site, a lot of what we buy never quite lives up to the manufacturers hype. Either it is constructed with cheap materials or the functionality is not what was advertised. So despite a slew of positive reviews, I never really counted on the Wagner Power Steamer to amount to all that much, not that this stopped me from ordering it.

I ordered it directly from Amazon to save on the nearly $20 shipping fee despite it being back ordered for 4 to 6 weeks. So I was pleasantly surprised when my package arrived 5 days later. It took me a few days to get around to unpacking the Power Steamer. When I finally did, I was in for my next surprise, the build quality. It was top notch. Both the unit and attachments were constructed from heavy duty plastic that should stand up to years of use. I was especially pleased with the quality and variety of the included accessories. The unit shipped with 2 extension wands, 4 nozzle brushes, a window squeegee, scrub brush with floor mop option, wallpaper remover and a jet nozzle. Even the extra long power cord was nice and a solid. Really my only complaint was lack of a convenient way to store said cord.

Now was starting to feel pretty good about this purchase and I had not even used it yet and the function of the Power Steamer is what will really blow you away. On a full tank you can get about 45 minutes of continuous steam with just 15 minutes of heating time and I have put that time to good use. So far I have cleaned a bunch of windows, the bathrooms – the Power Steamer will make your grout look like new in just a few seconds and you won’t believe what you will end up on your rag since the steam will penetrate every nook and cranny, my aquarium, all my solid surface floors, plus my oven, grill and smoker.

I think what I like best about cleaning with steam is the complete absence of the headache inducing chemical smells of typical household cleaners. That and the really good job steam does in breaking up just about any kind of dirt or grime I could find.

I have a huge empty wall in my kitchen that I have been trying to figure out how to use for some time now and I think I have found it. The Wine Barrel Stave Wine Rack is made of recycled wine barrel staves and can display up to 5 bottles. The dark wood finish and black metal hardware should look at home in any kitchen.

Eton FR300 Emergency Crank Radio

eton1

I picked up one of these little beauties after last month’s ice storm knock out power for nearly a week. Endorsed by the Red Cross, the FR300 combines and LED light/cellphone charger and AM/Radio into one small – hand cranked – package. In our tests 60 seconds of cranking turned into about 45 minutes of power, which is pretty darn good. In addition to the standard AM/FM bands you also get 7 NOAA weather channels and a weather alert, and TV-VHF audio reception for channels 2 – 13. The spiffy red metal case is just gravy. Looking for something for the car? Check out the FR150, handheld size with the same features plus solar recharging…

Staub Grill Pan

stuab

I am a year around griller but there are limits. Between a huge ice storm a few weeks back and now about 10 inches of snow over that last few days, I have only been able to break out my trusty Weber once in the last month. So to fill in the gaps when mother natures makes it impossible to get outside, I like the Staub Grill pan.

It’s made from heavy duty aluminum with an enamel coating making it relatively non-stick. The raised ridges leave nice grill marks and also allow any fat to render off and flavor the meat. The best feature of the pan is the removable handle, which allows you quickly move its from burner to oven just by popping it off. Storage is easier too, just fold the handle back onto the pan.

LED Light Fixtures

While still a little too pricey for most of us to convert our whole houses over, LED fixtures do offer significant energy and thus cost savings over standard and even CF lightbulbs. Their benefits include lasting about 10 times longer and using 50% less power than other bulbs. Dean Kamen (the guy who invented the Segway) converted his whole three acre island including the Stonehenge replica. With the energy savings he was able to take himself entirely off the power grid.

The Bissell Healthy Home Really Sucks

5770-l

Of course, since its a vacuum, that a good thing! The saga started about a year ago when my trusty Hoover died. One minute it was going along just fine but one loud pop and a huge cloud of dust later she was gone. After some research I was on my way to Sears to pick up the Consumer Reports top rated Kenmore upright. But in a moment of “inspiration” I decided to stop at my local vacuum store for some professional advice. 30 minutes and one good sales job later I left with a Eureka Pro model (like one you see in hotels with no attachments.) To make a long story short, The Eureka didn’t suck…

So after putting up for with for way too long I finally decided to get a new unit a few weeks ago.  I most ordering one of the Dyson models but just couldn’t pull the trigger on the high price tag so I decided to take a chance on the Bissell Healthy Home based on its great reviews and that was nearly $200 cheaper didn’t hurt either.

And what a great decision it was. The Healthy home is easily the best vacuum I have ever owned. It is packed with useful features and attachments including a ridiculously long power cord. I can pretty much clean my whole house without unplugging. I really like the onboard attachment that were lacking on my old machine. The Healthy Home comes with two extension wands, a long crevice tool, an upholstry brush, plus a power brush for stairs or pet hair removal. There is also a dual filtration system including a HEPA filter. Additionally, the Healthy Home uses similar cyclone collection system to the Dyson to maintain consistent suction.  Not Bad!

Bissell’s attention to detail is pretty nice too, like the power button on the top of the handle, the on/off switch for the beater brush just a little farther down plus the automatic kill setting for the brush when the handle is locked upright. I also like the bagless option so I can empty the container after each use. With two cats that track litter everywhere this was a must have for me because with a bagged unit you inevitably wind up with that terrible litter smell if you don’t change the bag each time.

Of course, I haven’t even mentioned the best part yet, what is got out of my carpets. For comparison purposes, I vacuumed my family room with the Eureka first then the new Bissell. The results were pretty disgusting:

The good news is all the dirt and hair is now out of my carpet and they look and feel pretty much new or at least as new as 4 year old carpet can be…

Bose Music Monitor Computer Speakers

bose

Another Christmas gift post for you today…I always chuckle when I read negative review of the Bose stereos or speakers. Price aside, I have a difficult time believing there is much to hate about any of their products that I have used. Sure there are few things that I would like to see changed like better pricing and perhaps an increased bass output but to me, those complaints are minor compared the upside of these devices.

Personally, I own the Bose® QuietComfort® 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones and the Bose Acoustic Wave Music System II – Graphite Gray . Both have far exceed my performance expectations.

This year the family added the Bose Wave Music System and  the Computer Music Monitors to our collection.

The Music Monitor Computer speakers were the most surprising to me. They are small but quite heavy, producing great highs and lows without the need for a subwoofer, making them perfect for travel. I have found myself using them for office presentations or watching movies in my hotel room when I don’t feel like using my headphones. At $400 I had some high expectations for these units and they exceeded them.

And while I realize these are expensive pieces, I am a firm believer in “you get what you pay for”. Bose has never disappointed me with the quality of their products or the sound they produce. No, I am not a audiophile and neither do I want to spend hours researching cheaper or better alternatives. If you are looking for a system with clean lines and clear, crisp sounds then Bose more than adequately fits the bill.

Linksys Wireless Home Audio Networking

At CES this week, Cisco introduced a new home audio system that looks to be full of promise. Under its popular but maybe dying brand Linksys, the company debuted a slate of products for music enthusiasts that will allow them to wireless network their music to any room.

Included in the release were wireless speakers, extenders and controllers among other goodies. I like the idea of the extender. It plugs into an existing home audio set up streaming in music from the controller unit. Obviously Cisco intends to compete for the dollars customers would otherwise spend on a Sonos system. While the pricing is extremely competitive, I am wondering how the quality will compare.

Industrial Design Meets the Nail Clipper – FINALLY!

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Ok, I am not really excited about nail clippers, but this pair from ACE (the guys you brought you the black, back pocket comb) are about as cool as it gets. I saw them on one my favorite site, Uncrate and ordered a set which arrived today. They are sharp (pun intended) and constructed of heavy duty stainless steel making quick work of any kind of nails.
